How to Publish and Print Professional Looking DVDs and CDs

CD Publishing Chaos… Tamed

In our continuing discussion of basic definitions – has this scenario ever happen to you or a loved one?

“Okay, I know I need to slam out some CDs for the band and maybe while I’m at it some DVDs of our last show. Easy right? I can pay that guy down the road to do it – but our needs will be ongoing now that we’re hitting the big-time. Maybe I should invest in some CD publishing equipment?

So, I know what I need to do and I can buy a CD duplicator, a CD replication system, a CD publishing system, or a…..Ahhhhhh!!! Maybe I should just take a nap.”

Feel like this? You don’t have to.

Here we have it broken down nice and easy-like:

Duplication: Duplication means that you’re outputting discs using blank CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. CD-Rs have layer of dye that forces data onto the disc, i.e you’ve got a copy.

Replication: This is making CDs from scratch, sort of like if you were a manufacturing plant for CDs. Injection molding equipment presses the CD and a stamper (stampers are complicated and a long story for another time) is created that serves as the master disc. The CDs that come out of this process are copies of the stamper.

Duplicator system: A duplicator copies CDs and/or DVDs. You start with your master disc and just run copies out – simple, basically like if you could stick a CD in a Xerox machine.

Publishing system: Now publishing systems are a bit more complicated – but do more. Your publishing system connect to your home or office computer. Throw in a printer and some CD-R drives and bingo you’ve got yourself a CD publishing system. These systems were created for outputting CD-Rs from hard drive or network files.
