CD Marketing Can Get You Radio Airplay
Yesterday we talked about how CD duplication can help you sustain a good income while you’re building your music career, and tonight we’re going to talk about how CD marketing can help you get radio airplay. It’s really a simple concept, but it takes some dedication and consistency.
Want more radio play? Check out CD marketing
CD marketing can actually get you radio airplay if you target your CD to the right program directors. The first thing you’ll want to do is get a list of the program directors you want to listen to your CD. Next, create a demo. If you’ve already got a demo, then good. Next, you’ll want to compile a list of at least 500 to 1000 radio stations. This may take some serious time, but it’s well worth it if you want your music played. Make sure the radio stations play the kind of music that you play. It makes no sense to send your demo to a program director of a classical music station if you’re playing P-funk and old school R&B.
The second stage of CD marketing to get your music heard on the radio consists of obtaining all the addresses, phone numbers and emails of the program directors. You’ll want to create an Excel file so that you have it all sorted out and neat. Then, you’ll send out the CD by mail. Make sure that you have the correct addresses printed on the packages. You can do this yourself or you can get someone to help you. Then, make sure that if you send your CD off that you will follow up with phone calls.
For example, if you’re sending out 20 this week, you’ll need to follow up with a phone call about 7 to 10 days after the CD has been sent out. Don’t let them throw your CD in a pile of other demos. Also, you don’t want to get into the first phase of CD marketing and then only call once. Most program directors are super busy! You’ll need to call at least 8 to 10 times to get anyone to ever talk to you. Yes, it is hard work, but it can pay off big time!
Remember, you’ve got thousands of competitors that are calling and mailing every day to these radio stations. You’ve got to be tenacious! The third phase of CD marketing will consist of follow up emails. Now, some people will think that they can just send out the CD and email and then sit back and get the calls. No, if you do that you probably won’t get very far. That’s because most people have spam filters in their email boxes. It’s more than likely that your email will be deleted without being read or won’t even arrive. That’s why you’ve got to call. Calling is probably the most important part, besides sending out the CD, when it comes to CD marketing.
Use the power of CD marketing to advance your entertainment carreer
Send out about 20 to 30 CD’s a week or in proportion to the amount of calls you’ll be able to handle the next week. For example, if you’re only able to handle about 10 calls a week, then you’d want to send out 10 CDs. Emails are easy, and you can probably do more than 10 emails a week. Just be ready to send out a CD to anyone who replies and requests it.
When CD marketing is done efficiently, you can get your foot in the door with radio stations and get your songs played. CD marketing can zap your economic blues as well, by finally getting you booked for gigs and performances. Use the power of CD marketing to advance your career!
