CD Publishing: How Bands Can Benefit From DIY Efforts

Today I received an email from a musician whose work I admire. More of less it said: “I feel great about the new album and even though I had the master in January, the street date will not be until September because of a CD publishing error.” Bands that take care of CD publishing on their own will discover that there are fewer gliches that come up: once the master is on hand, it’s all a matter of setting it and forgetting it.

However, control and timing are not the only benefits that bands will be able to experience when they tackle CD publishing on their own. Additionally, bands will find:

  • That they have more control of the art work
  • They can market “limited edition” discs
  • They can benefit from not having to store huge quantities of published CDs
  • They can use a limited CD in order to raise funds for a studio recording session
  • They’ll have the chance to add footage or artwork to the disc without an extra charge
  • No minimums

Simply put, when bands are able to tackle CD publishing on their own, they have more control over the process, are able to save money and are able to get the word out about who they are and what their sound is. When you’re trying to get noticed, all of those things are fantastic.
